    Hi there –

I am trying to export audio files from final cut pro and I want to maintain my audio levels. Does anyone know of a way to do this without purchasing Automatic Duck for $500?

This is a one time operation for me and I hate to spend the money on something I will only use once.

Let me know if anyone has any ideas. Thanks!

None that I am aware of. I believe that FCP 6 will have this option now, but the current version does not.

If you happen to be in the Los Angeles area, and your project is portable, I could do it for you for a small fee. If not, you can see if there is anyone in your area that has it, and can do this for you.

Not until FCP 6 comes out.

There’s a product from Gallery Software called XMLpro that can do it, but it’s even more expensive than automatic duck.

Can you explain yourself some more?

You can send your project to Soundtrack Pro to have more flexibility to save. You can export your audio from the timeline to AIFF or OMF.

Why would your audio levels change? Anything I have ever done with FCP maintains the levels when I export.

When you export an OMF for ProTools or other audio editor that is NOT Soundtrack, the levels you set in the timeline, and keyframes and rubber banding, are not transferred in the OMF. They are all set to the level they occur on the original clip.

Automatic Duck exported an OMF that kept all the audio mixing levels you did in FCP, so that the Audio Mixer didn’t have to start from scratch. Many like to start from scratch, but many others don’t.

Export your tracks as AIFF files, in additon to providing the OMF. Your sound guy can line up the AIFF files on additional tracks in Pro Tools…he can use them as a guide, or actually replace the raw clips, if your keframing was intricate and you want him to use exactly what you did.

When you send an OMF to ProTools from FCP, the audio level information is lost.

A lot of Pro Tools guys don’t even want the editor’s levels. They like to start with a clean slate.

I’ll agree that most do. But some don’t. Often they don’t have time to do the levels themselves, and they trust the editor enough to go with his levels as a base.

Well, personally I have never export to OMF but I would have to agree with FCP. If I’m working in Pro Tools, I’d rather do all of my corrections in Pro Tools.

But when working with Soundtrack Pro or just plain ole AIFF, the corrections have always passed through for me.
