I think there used to be a setting in Premiere so that if you put a clip in your sequence, it would automatically scale the clip to fit full frame in the sequence (if your clip and sequence had mismatching resolutions).

Am I imaging this? Does anyone know where that setting is, if it exists?

    Hey Ann,

Interestingly, just a few weeks ago, I came across that setting in Premiere Pro preferences or Sequence settings – can’t remember which, as Premiere Pro was crashing all over the place on the project I was trying to get out of the door.

It is in there, but I do remember thinking “Why would I ever want to do that”?
Which is obvious if you have a large amount of photo/graphics files that you need to scale.

If not in preference, check your sequence settings.

    Hope that this helps.

Hi, yes, that is a very useful setting, and that is under Preferences- Media settings.

And choose the Set to Frame Size, not the scale, to keep the quality better.

    Brilliant, thanks so much!!!

For anyone following, this is for PC users. For Mac users, this setting is under the Premiere Pro menu, Settings > Media, and choose the option ‘Fit to Frame’.

It doesn’t just scale pictures and GFX, It scales video too. I find it very useful because we are increasingly living in a world of mixed mediums…. multicam shoots often use different cameras. Iphone footage is often incorporated for an experimental look.
Typically on a feature, the DIT should standaradise all the proxies to 1080 for me, but that’s not hapening on my current gig and I don’t understand why. Some stuff is coming in at 4k, some 1080, some a weird format which requires it to be scaled up 115%. Needless to say it’s doing my head in but this automatic scale function is a great way to get around the problem
