Activity Forums VEGAS Pro Automate repetitive Pan/Crop

  • Automate repetitive Pan/Crop

Posted by Barry Hull on December 4, 2012 at 11:27 pm

Within “talking head” type videos we regularly move the talent, using Pan/Crop, to the left side of the screen in order to show graphics to the right. The Pan is always to the same position, takes about one second, and we’ll be doing it at least a hundred times.

Does anyone know of a plug-in to simplify this process, so that I can place the cursor on the timeline where I want to move to take place, click “Apply” and the Pan and keyframes that I have setup are applied?

I would also like to be able to automate the process, one-click, to move the talent back to original position after the graphic is no longer needed.

I looked at Vegasaur, Ultimate S Pro, they did not seem to have what I need. Any others out there that might do the trick?

FYI, I have no idea how to write a script, how to upload one, or anything else regarding them. I suppose I could learn but I would rather find a nice simple plug-in already created for this.

    Thanks,

    Barry W. Hull

Barry you can do this all within Vegas without anything else. I’m not in-front of Vegas right now so I’m doing this from memory.

2 ways you can do this. 1 when your done setting the crop the way you want you can right click the clip & select copy, then you can go to another clip, right click it then select paste event attributes, do that to each clip. 2 which I think would be better for you is to go all the way to the left of your timeline where the track numbers are at, right to the right of the numbers there are a set of icons, hover your mouse over the second icon which is a square icon, it will say track motion, simply use the track motion to set up your crops the way you want them to be, every time you drop a clip on that track it will have the crop the way you want it, when you don’t want it simply put it on another track, so you will have 2 tracks, 1 set with the crop you want & one set without it.

    Have fun!

Barry, I put a really quick veg file using Pan/Crop that I think will do what you need.
    Get it at https://dl.dropbox.com/u/20488019/repetitive.zip
It was done in Pro 8 and uses a head and shoulders still shot of me (included in the file).
Take a look at it and feel free to modify it to suit your needs.
Based on what you said, I would recommend splitting the timeline at the desired beginning and end points of each “move”.
As long as you stick to the same length each time, all you have to do is copy the first “move”, right-click on the the next one and do a “paste event attributes”.
    Hope this helps.

Sorry Barry, there is no plugin that i know of to achieve
what you are looking for. But Shawn and Mike have given you
    good alternatives.

Actually Barry, we are working on a new FASST App plug-in that sounds similar to what you want. I’ll contact you via email and maybe you can help beta test it. 😉

Thanks all, good suggestions. Mike, I downloaded the veg file, works like a champ. My issue is that each “move” needs to take place at a different location within each video, and for a different amount of time. The distance and speed of the move will remain the same, but where I want the move to occur on the timeline, and where I want to return to original position, change with each video.

That is why I was hoping for a plug-in that I could setup beforehand, place the cursor where I want to move to happen, and then one click, move the talent.

While you’re at it John, what would REALLY be nice, if I could setup both a “move left” and a “move right”, all custimized with setup parameters, located on the tool bar, for easy clicking, or even better, make them hot keys so I can simply click my ShuttlePRO v2 while I’m sipping coffee. Sign me up for that beta test!

Barry, I’m glad you liked the veg file.
It sounds like you’re looking for a much more customized app though so hopefully John can come through for you.
Knowing him and his many scripting talents, I’m sure he will 🙂

By the way John, no rush on that FASST App plugin, take your time, don’t need it until tomorrow. 🙂

Barry my second description will be a total of 2 clicks for you to do what you want to do. One click to split your file, on your normal track (without crops) And one click to move your clip down to the next adjacent track which you have setup for your crops.

    2 clicks in total.

    Have fun!
