I can’t seem to copy an Auto-Trace layer from one comp to another comp. The auto-trace layer in question is about 20 seconds long. When I copy it and than try and paste it in another comp, I get a new layer but there seems to be 1 frame (if even that) there. I can’t drag the layer handles to pull it to the full 20 seconds.

I originally had about 20 different layers of auto-traces and only wanted about 10 in my next comp, and because the layers wouldn’t copy/paste, I had to copy the first comp, rename it and delete the 10 discards. But now I want to bring over one of the discards and I can’t seem to do it.

I don’t seem to have any problems copy/pasting footage, other layers, etc…

Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

OK, now that’s just weird… don’t know if this is a bug… or if my system sucks (could very well be the latter) but I was originally pasting the 20 second Auto-Trace layer from a 6 minute comp into a 1.5 minute comp. It was originally at the 9 second mark. When I pasted the layer into the second comp I could see the layer name to the right, but couldn’t see the file on the layer, so I hit Alt Home to bring it to the start of the comp. It would then be there but have no length at all.

So I tried pasting the Auto-Trace layer and then changed my second comp to 6 minutes and… lo and behold… the layer suddenly appears at the 9 second mark where it should… but it is only 1 SECOND LONG… can’t drag it to full length.

I guess one second is better than no frames… but it doesn’t help much when you need the other 19 seconds.

Just thought I would add this note to my process/frustration/confusion.

Any suggestions would not hurt my feelings one bit.

Isn’t the auto-trace just automatically creating and animating a mask using keyframes on a new layer (if you choose to)? So the solution might be to create a new layer in your new comp, then copy/paste just the mask(s)?
