  • Auto Size all 1080 footage to fit 720 timeline? PPro

Posted by Ammon Baker on December 27, 2010 at 5:10 pm

I am editing footage in Premiere Pro CS5, on a Macbook Pro, no external hardware. I was wondering if there is a way for premiere to automatically resize all 1080 footage added to timeline to fit in a 720 window. I can go through and size all clips manually, but it is inaccurate and time consuming.

If not, is there a way to size each clip accurately without using the manual transform tool?

    Thank you.

    Hi Ammon

If I were you, I would work in 1080 until you are finished and then create a new sequence at 720 and pull your 1080 sequence into the 720 sequence and resize it to fit in that. By doing this you will save a lot of work and finish off doing it all in one go.

This is called nesting and you won’t lose any quality by doing this … I should have a tutorial release in the next day or so explaining nesting in more detail.

    Hope this helps

PS – at the bottom center of your project panel (just below your image) make sure that you have the size box set to ‘fit’ as this makes sure you see the whole clip in the viewer window

    … because it’s all about stories …

    Hi Ammon,

Sound advice from Andrew, but one more thing you may find helpful – in Preferences, there is a checkbox for “Scale to Frame Size” – if you enable this prior to importing the clips, they will automatically scale to fit, for instance using the 1080 clips in the 720p sequence. Saves a lot of work changing clips one at a time (with right-click option).

Thank you, that was exactly what I was looking for. Though, I cannot find it. Where exactly is it in preferences?

Under General: Default Scale to fit frame size.

You could also select all the clips in the timeline, and RightClick > Scale to Frame Size
