If I place some HD footage in an SD timeline it ‘auto’ scales to fit within the comp
If I decide to copy this HD clip into an HD comp is stays at the reduced size.
is there something in the prefs to override this?

    thanks for your help

Put the play-head over the clip in the SD sequence and hit “F”. The clip will show-up in the browser window ready to be dragged to the HD sequence.
Or double click the clip in the SD sequence. It will show-up in the browser but resized. Drag it to the HD sequence and:
Contol-click the clip in the HD time-line and “Remove atributes”> basic motion+ distort.
The clip will fit in the canvas window.
