Knowing Final Cut lets you edit in real time, I seem to be unable to edit my footage and effects/transitions in real time without rendering, or any video for that matter. Any time I add a new video/audio transition or add a new video clip i always have to render before I can view my stuff.

    Any ideas?

Your timeline codec doesn’t match your footage codec or you are working with non standard video codecs.

You’re working in an Uncompressed 10bit HD sequence (or higher).

    Final Cut is not Premiere.

    Ryan,

It’s always clear to those of us who help people here when someone jumps right in and starts editing without reading the manual. So, for beginners and those moving over from other systems, who missed the books, Walter Biscardi has created a short video tutorial that covers the essentials that everyone needs to know in order to create timelines that are setup properly for realtime editing in FCP. You can find it at https://library.creativecow.net/articles/biscardi_walter/realtime_sequences.php .

BTW, if you don’t follow the intructions there or in the Apple manual, you will be condemned forever to editing in FCP render Hell, so go for it and get up to speed in a hurry.

Thank you. I think with practice and making habits I can get this.
