    Hello,

I have an interesting request from a client. They would like me to import a tab delineated text file into InDesign, complete with numbered questions and figure numbers referenced in the question. Then, they would like the question numbers and the figure numbers to automatically update if one of the questions is deleted or moved, all without re-importing the text file (in other words, once the text is in ID, it will only be edited in ID).

    Does anyone have any ideas?

    Thanks in advance.

This sounds like you would be retyping much of it, rather than importing data.

For numbering, you just use InDesigns numbering.
The question would be typed (or copy and paste)
The figure number should be a name instead and use the cross-reference feature.

    Hey Terry,

Thanks for this. I’ve been working with the cross-reference feature and I’m having some difficulties. What I have is a Figure Number followed by a caption. What I need is the cross reference only to display the figure number in my paragraph text and exclude the caption. It seems all I can use with the cross reference is a para style to select the figure number and that’s giving most of the caption as well.

Do you have any suggestions for achieving what I need?

    Thanks again,
    Jeff
