Is using auto contrast on a clip in AE a no-no, as it once was in Photoshop of old, where Curves were the preferred way to go for due to the linear overall affect of the “auto” option?

    thanks

Auto contrast can be very useful for removing flicker, but it does not provide the degree of control over an image that a manually-controlled effect like Curves would.

    Thanks for the reply Walter.

Would you say that auto contrast is inclined to destroy or compress pixel highlight and shadow information as well?

The Black Clip and White Clip settings will help you limit the destruction.

    How exactly?
Is there a way you can see the effect whilst using the slider as in Levels in Photoshop when pressing Alt whilst moving the sliders gives you a graphic view of what is being clipped or blown out?

If you add Levels effects before and after the Auto Contrast, you will be able to see the before and after histograms in the Effects panel.
