  • Aumating shot selection, speed and building a sequqnce….

Posted by Kevin on October 15, 2005 at 12:35 am

    Hi list,

I am looking into automating building a sequence in FCP.

Basically I am trying to arrive at a sequqnce which has 60 clips each 3 seconds long and running at 25% speed. It’s a montage of old family and corporate footage I will be cutting to muisc.
Once I get these selects I can slip and slide to arrive at a final edit.

What I was hoping was that I could scan through footage and create a keystoke command which would the exact number of frame left and right of the playhead in the canvas and arrive which would deliver a 3 second clip running at quarter speed.

Would anyone know of any way I might accomplish this with a keystoke.

Might be a job for some sort of scripting.

I would love to hear the opinions fot he experts.

    Warmest,

    Kevin

    I’m afraid that FCP isn’t scriptable. BUT…

Once you set an in point in the viewer, you can dial in a duration by typing in the Viewer’s duration TC field there which will set an out point.

Typing cmd+j will open a window to set the speed change. Probably should do this first then set the duration… F9 key will keystroke the edit if you’ve changed the expose keyboard shortcuts in your system preferences. If you don’t move the Timeline or Canvas’ play head, the edit will go right after the last one. If I’ve read you right, this is about as close to a keystroke only edit as I can think of. You can also type cmd+4 to activate the Browser, and use the arrow keys to navigate through it, and when you’ve selected a clip that way, typing on the return key opens it in the Viewer so you can set an in point to start the process.

Thanks Jerry for posting back. That’s a shame about FCP not being scriptable. I thought all Apple’s apps were. Oh well.

Isn’t there a separate FCP language (that pluggins are written in). Maybe that an avenue to discover.

I routinely create a similar project – a video montage which has x number of slips, 3 secs long and 25% speed.

I would save an early visit to the carpels syndrome clinit if I could scrub the time line and be able to hit a key which gives me the above from the playhead into the time line. I could then finish a project by slipping and fine tuning the shots.

    >Typing cmd+j will open a window to set the speed change. Probably should do this first then set the duration…< Can you explain this more. I would set the speed setting in the viewer? When I do this the whole hour off media I'm working with runs ar 25%. I guess I would have to change this back to 100% if I wanted to listen to audio as I scrub through. But already what you've thought me I can tell is going to really speed up the process for me. Many thanks again for your feedback. Many thanks and warm regards, Kevin

Yeah, if you change the speed in the viewer, it will be applied to the master clip. However, you could duplicate your master clip first, and change the speed of the copy…

    Hi Jerry,

Thank you so much for the post back. Speed changing a copy. That’s perfect.

One more question if I may.

I would duplicate the media in the browser or would a speed change to a duplicate also affect the original.

Thanks again for you great input on this question. It will save me days on my work process.

    Warmest,

    Hi Jeery,

Following up on our earlier thread, is there any way, when working with a clip running at 25% in the viewer to have clip inserted at 3:00 secs into the time line.

I am inputting the 3:00 sec timecode in each time now.

Wondering if there’s any way to have that 3.00 setting remain constant and for the end point to automatically be set three second from the in point.

Many thanks again for all your great input.

Also can you advise me if it’s possible to automate in FCP. You said earlier that it’s not scriptable as an app, but I’m wondering if there’s a sepcific FCP scripting langaauge, I might be able to accomplish the above task in.

    Many thanks and warm regards,

    kevin
