    Hi,

I’ve just had some strange error when laying a QuickTime with a 48khz to a Sony DVWA500.

Sound Input was set to digital as was the video (embedded audio obviously).

In Edit to Tape my tone went over just fine at -12dbs, was visible on the meters and was audible on the tape when I played it back. However the 48khz audio which the client had provided me with (and which might possibly have been corrupted in some way- musician not used to delivering for broadcast specs) though it showed up on the transfer, wouldn’t play back over the deck…EVEN THOUGH THE TONE WOULD.

Does this sound like an error with my config (BM4.8, Mac10.3.9, FCP 4.5, QT6.5.2) or an error with the sound as delivered? I would add I’ve never encountered a problem like this before, though am unsure as to possible problems with OS 10.3.9 (had just upgraded)

    Feedback appreciated….

    Hi Matthew,

[Matthew Ingram] “Sound Input was set to digital as was the video (embedded audio obviously).”

Where was this setting configured? It should not have been necessary to configure anything if you chose one of the Blackmagic NTSC or PAL easy setups for use with your Digibeta.

Your system configuration seems OK to me although I have not upgraded from Mac OS X 10.3.8 to 10.3.9 due to a number of strange reports on the Internet about v10.3.9.

My guess is there is some issue with the audio file you have been provided. Try using QuickTime Pro to export the file as 48kHz and then use the exported audio file in your FCP project. My guess is that this might overcome whatever problem there might be with the audio file.

Thanks Luke. That setting was on the Digbeta deck itself (SIF as opposed to AES/EBU as well). I was using the usual Easy Set-Up profile within FCP.

I did try re-render out the sound with FCP’s export AIFF function at 48 then re-import it. I probably should have tried it under QuickTime Pro. Also slightly kicking myself that i didnt try the AES/EBU output (I’m using an Extreme BM Card)

I think you’re probably right, that the audio file was corrupt BUT its a bit of a shame at the end of the day because I had to work to convince the client that we could just rent in a deck (their Media 100 was tied up) and it all went slightly belly-up. Oh well, no matter…
