Audio waveforms tough to edit to the beat to FCPX
Hey there
I’ve searched around on the internet for a little help to no avail so I wonder if you guys could help.
I found editing to the beat much easier in FCP7, the waveform seemed to display the peaks (beats) in a way that was easier to align my footage to.
So are there any tricks in FCPX I can do to help with editing to the beat? I have split the waveform into dual mono (and deselected one track), increased the size of the waveform (using the switch) and set the timeline view to waveform with a little picture.
Any further ideas?

Hi Olly,
The approach I use is: edit the audio only into the Primary Storyline, then while playing, set Markers by ear using the M key.

Then with Snapping active, you can set a range between your markers and use these as In and Out Points for editing your video as Connected clips.

So its more a case of by ear than by eye? I’ve always relied on the peak of the waveform to direct me, it seems very trial and error and doesn’t help much with those tiny adjustments.

I always do it by ear. I usually find myself doing a little dance on my swivel chair to get into the groove of the music!
As you can see from the working with markers link I posted, you can nudge markers a frame at a time to line them up with the peaks if you prefer
Another approach you could consider if your beat points are regularly spaced is to calculate how many frames / seconds you want between markers. If for example it was 3 secs 4 frames, click in the Dashboard and type +3.04 to move the Playhead, then press M to place a marker.
