Jay,

Thanks for the mention. There’s seems to be a definite lack of location audio training. Not sure why. That’s why I put “the little book” out. I’m a member of several film groups and whenever there are showings, it amazes me that the sound can be so forgotten. Not in every case, but on average.

It’s not just the location audio, but what they do or don’t do with it in post. By the time it gets to the screen, some of it is just trash. As with video, the best stuff is part art and part craft.

Maybe I need to get on that audio post book people have been urging me to write.

In addition to Ty’s book, you might check out https://www.equipmentemporium.com. There are “seminar” type papers on location sound production. I think you now have to join the site to access them but I think it’s free. Also, https://www.locationsound.com click on the “tech tips” tab.

Just go out and experiment. Find out what mic placements work and which ones don’t. And don’t just use one microphone type – try shotguns, lavaliers, large-diaphragm condensers, etc. Try different techniques, different ways to minimize wind noise without affecting audio quality…

But most importantly: get out there and DO IT!!!
