Audio Tips
Hey guys! I was wondering if I could ask for your help. I use the platinum version of sony vegas 8 to make fan videos. I rip the clips from DVD’S, so sometimes I have audio problems when putting in voiceovers because of the background music on the clip. Does anybody have any tips? It sounds awful when the song/music I have chosen is being drowned out by the actual music on the clip, and the voices sometimes seem too loud because I have to raise the volume to compensate for the music I am using. Help!

Don’t raise the voice… lower the music. Listen to commercials. What do you hear? There is music at the start and then the music is lowered as the voice begins talking.
I don’t know if the Movie Studio version of Vegas supports a Volume Envelope but that’s the easiest way to address this. Highlight the music track and press the “V” key. If a purple line appears then you are all set. Double-click to place a keyframe on the line. Place two at the beginning of the narration and two at the end of the narration and pull down the middle line that it creates to lower the volume for the duration of the narration.

I use a dialogue notch filter in these cases. It is set up in the equalizer with a notch centered at about 2500hz and 1000-1500hz wide. That filter is applied to the music to keep it from stomping on the voices.

I’m not sure I follow you. If you apply a volume envelope on the music and lower it by about -18dB there is no way you will hear the music even more. It will be extremely quiet in the background.
