  • Audio sync problems – I need Smaller steps

I just finished editing a music video in FCP. The song I edited to was not the final version, it had a click track to it(also had a 1 measure preroll). I just imported the final version of the song which is all the same except there is no click track and no preroll.

Now since there is no click preroll I cannot just line up the beginnings of the song, so I just lined it up manually. When I zoom into the wave it is just barely off but when I go to move it, it only lets me move in frames. If I move a frame back it is early and if I move a frame forward it is late.

How can I move audio in smaller steps than frames?

It is barely noticeable but it makes me really uncomfortable knowing it’s off. Here is a link to the video if you want to take a look.

It’s in the manual – search for “Subframe Synchronization of Audio and Video”

from the timeline load the audio you want to subframe edit into the viewer. then zoom in. if you move the playhead it moves by frames…but if you hold shift while you move the playhead it moves withoug locking to frames. once you get the playhead where you need it set your inpoint.

FCP will allow you to nudge your audio down to 1/100th of a frame. Soundtrack Pro will allow you to nudge your audio down to a single sample. STP also makes it easier to see the waveform at extreme magnification down to the sample level. If you really need to adjust the sync with subframe precision, I’d do it in STP.

Thanks everyone, I was able to make subframe cuts to the audio in FCP. I got the audio synced at the beginning. Now it is drifting out of sync towards the end. I figure this would be a sampling or a pulldown problem so I found a similar post and followed this guy’s advice to change the easy setup settings and re import. It worked, thanks.

Good on you for caring to go to that length to resync. Most people don’t think sub frame matters. There are some of us who care and can see and hear the difference so thanks.

Yep, we do stuff right… and hopefully one day it will pay off.
