  • Audio Sync Problem on Export

    Hi,

I’m confounded by an audio problem that keeps cropping up when I export.

I have made a series of 10-minute video podcasts. These were shot in HDV PAL (I’m in the UK) and have been edited in Premiere Pro CS3.

The project settings, which match the format in which the material was shot, are:

    HDV 1080i
    25 fps
    1440×1080
    Pixel aspect: HD Anamorphic 1.333
    Upper field first
    Audio 48,000 Hz

The podcasts are complete and have been exported successfully to tape (as an HDV, not standard DV, project).

So I have the master on tape. This plays back on to a TV via my camcorder perfectly.

I have also recaptured the master as an m2t file. Placed on a Premiere Pro timeline it too is fine.

The problem arises when I try to export this m2t file from Premiere Pro into another format (NB the m2t file is exactly as captured – no filters or editing, etc.). Previously I have found avi files for HDV edits to be unsatisfactory as they were full of jagged edges. Exporting to a QuickTime .mov file gives a wonderful picture but about halfway through the sound is ahead of the picture by about half a second. However, by the end of the 10-minute video the sound is back in sync.

Ultimately, I am looking for a format in which I can export and meet the following criteria:

1920×1080 (I prefer square pixels as 1440×1080 with 1:1.333 pixels doesn’t always playback in the correct aspect ratio).
Great picture quality (but can be compressed)
    Audio in sync
Readily convertible to different popular formats

This would be my electronic master rather than my tape master. I am happy for it to be compressed as an uncompressed file is unfeasibly large.

I have tried various QuickTime settings. In particular I have tried the H.264 compressor, Animation (that results in a phenomenally huge file!) and the Apple iPod preset (obviously not full res). Rather than export at 1440×1080 with anamorphic pixels I have exported as 1920×1080 with square pixels (for reasons stated above).

I don’t believe the problem is system related at my end as exactly the same thing has occurred on an Intel based system and an AMD system.

I love the picture quality with the H.264 compressor but the sound goes out of sync. QuickTime files seem quite versatile but I’d be happy to use another format if anyone has any suggestions.

Otherwise, any ideas about what’s causing the audio sync problem and any suggestions about how to fix it?

    Very many thanks,

    Guy
