I’m using Final Cut 5.1.4 and I’m attempting to ingest beta video into final cut via IEEE 1394. I’m going through a Canopus converter (s-video in) and it looks and sounds great BUT the lip sync is off just a little bit on the clips. I’ve also tried going through a MiniDV deck with the same results. We’re tring to avoid using an expensive capture card. Has anyone else tackled this problem?

You are probably capturing fine, it is your monitoring that is likely off. When dealing with DV (which you are doing, as you are transcoding), there is slight delay between Canvas and External Video. For this, we change the frame offset. By default it is 4, which works out well for DV. If you have a capture card, this should be set to Zero.

Also, you will want to check synch on your external monitor with the speakers connected to the deck and not the Mac.

If you need to adjust the frame offset, go here:
System Settings > Playback Control > Frame Offset
