    Greetings,

I am editing a 34 min film that needs to have the rough cut submitted by tomorrow and all of the sudden I am having audio sync issues. Up until this point all of my renders have worked out great with the camera audio but now that I have laid in the audio from our sound guy it drifts out of sync when I render. It sounds great when it’s in FC though. Here are some stats:

using FC on a MacPro with 1g ram
rendering to an external USB2 drive

One note is that the sound guy is giving me aiff files rendered from his Windows machine. I mention this because I noticed a difference in levels when the file is played on Windows XP (his laptop or my Boot Camp) vs OS X. Any ideas???

Check and make sure that the “TC Rate” property of the audio matches the frame rate of your sequence. I’ve run into this problem before when getting audio files from windows machines. We’re editing in 30 fps (well, 29.97 but you get the idea) and the TC Rate is 25 fps, and so the audio plays in sync at the beginning but falls out of sync by the end of the sequence. The only fix we’ve found for this so far is removing the audio from your project, trashing prefrences, and then re-importing the audio. Sometimes we’ve had to do this 2-3 times before the audio came in right.

You might also be able to export the audio from QuickTime, converting it from wav to aif – then FCP might read it correctly. I’m sure you have a LOT of audio for this though. Maybe you can pull it into iTunes and convert all the audio at once that way if trashing prefs doesn’t work for you.

    Best,

    Ben

Hi Ben. I think I understand what you are saying but I’m not sure that it’s the problem. Under item properties the TC is set to source which I believe is correct. I don’t see any settings for frame rate for the audio. The file does play in sync with it’s in FC, just not when I render. The file is and aiff from a Windows machine. I have tried rendering QT, QT self contained, and mpeg via Compressor all with the same problem.

Maybe your USB drive is the problem. The transfer rate of USB drives is not consistent, so if those renders are playing out and losing sync, maybe that’s the issue.

Here’s another COW article about this, since I’ve never used USB for a drive interface. It might be okay for business data, but for audio / video I don’t think so.

Thanks for the tip. I will try rendering to a local drive.

What is the sample rate of the audio files he is giving you. do they match the sample rate of the sequence? you can check this in the browser.
