audio sync issue
Posted by Shay Carriere on November 21, 2006 at 10:27 pmI don’t use audio alot in AE, so I can’t figure out this issue. I’ve got an MPEG2 compressed video and I’m trying to preview a segment in the middle of the clip WITH its audio. Everytime I RAM preview it, it plays the rendered video but the audio that it plays is from 3 or 4 seconds earlier. If I RAM preview from the start of the clip, it’s synced fine. Any help would be appreciated.

November 21, 2006 at 11:15 pmsometimes ram previews don’t run at full speed and therefor the audio gets out of sync. If you hit ctrl+2 you will get the info box which will give you status while your RAM previewing. If it’s not running at realtime it will show you the framerate in red.
Maybe do a normal render to test – maybe the audio is out of sync on your MPEG-2 ?

November 21, 2006 at 11:17 pmLimit your work area to just the part you want to preview. You do it by going to beginning of the part you want and hitting the “b” (for Begin) key to mark the new beginning of the work area. Go to the end of the part you want and hit the “n” (for eNd) key to mark the new end of your work area.
Now ram preview. Don’t expect AE to get the ram preview right on the first time through. Sometimes it needs to to go through it a couple of times to get audio and video synced.
Still not working? You must have a really big comp — an HD comp, for instance — and AE can’t keep up. You can check by looking at the info panel. If the frame rate is in red as it plays back the ram preview, that’s the problem. Reduce your resolution to half and the comp size to 50% and try again. Yeah, reduced resolution AND size stinks, but sometimes you need real-time motion more than you need to see every detail.

November 23, 2006 at 6:29 pmIt’s not a hardware limitation; It’s simply a 720×480 MPEG2 in an equal sized comp that I’m previewing at 50% w/ half resolution. When I render out a movie of a portion of the clip that’s within the middle part of the comp the audio is off just as within the AE preview. Once again, if I preview or render a clip from frame 1 of the comp, it’s ok.
I’m thinking it may be some sort of audio interpreting problem or something within AE’s settings that’s preventing the audio from playing frame for frame with the video.
More on the imported video; it’s mpeg2 ripped from a DVD with Xilisoft and the audio was ripped at 44.1 khz (evidently mpeg2 doesn’t support 48 khz sampling).
thanks for the input guys. -

November 29, 2006 at 6:00 amcan you rip the audio seperately as a .WAV or .AIFF and then use that?

December 1, 2006 at 12:17 amWell, I guess it ended up being the Xilisoft rip that was causing the problem. I had teh editor send another of the same file and it worked fine.
thanks for the help anyways
