How can I prevent audio from becoming out of sync after changing the playback speed of a video?

I’m editing a video where I need to speed up and slow down different sections. After using velocity envelopes, some of the audio gradually becomes out of sync with the video. Is there a way in Vegas Pro to change the speed while keeping the audio perfectly synchronized, without having to manually adjust every section?

    Hey Johnny,

Are you slowing down and speeding up the audio too?

Or is it just the video?

Don’t know if you have mentioned it in another post, but it would be helpful to know what version of VEGAS you are working on, and the codec you have recorded your gameplay in?

    Some lower-end codecs are Long-GOP, which I call “never-the-same-timecode-twice”.
In other words, depending on the length of the clip, it can change your in and out points.
I am not sure how VEGAS deals with this, but it is a big issue on Premiere Pro the longer your recordings are, and if you are using a fast cut pace.
Allegedly, DaVinci, FCP, and Avid have another way of dealing with
Long-GOP than PPro, so they don’t have the same issue. Don’t know what the situation is with VEGAS.

    Hope this helps?

    Hey Mads,

Thanks for the explanation. I don’t think the Long-GOP issue is what’s causing it in my case though. The recordings are H.264, but I’ve tested the same thing with an intra-frame codec and I’m still getting the sync drift.

I’m also slowing down/speeding up both the video and audio together, so it’s not simply the audio being left at normal speed. I think the issue might be somewhere else in how VEGAS handles the velocity changes.

Hey Johnny, it seems that your text is a little bit bugged(It shows <div>)Anyways, I had a similar problem in VEGAS. What fixed it for me was using Ctrl+drag to adjust the event length first, rather than relying entirely on the velocity envelope. With velocity envelopes, VEGAS can end up calculating the audio/video timing differently after multiple speed changes. I split the event at each point where I wanted a different speed, adjusted the playback rate of each section, and then made sure “Lock audio to video” was enabled before making further edits. After doing it this way, I stopped getting the gradual drift. So I don’t think Long-GOP is necessarily the cause here — it seems more related to how the velocity changes are being applied.
