    hi,

I’m sure this has been asked a million times, sorry to ask for the millionth and one (i did look for it in the archives but can’t find the answer).

I’ve been editing for years and for the first time am having audio sync problems. HEre’s the deal, i’m editing a simple performance show: several dance pieces. I’m trying to link up the mp3 songs used for each dance piece with the camera audio (i know aiff better but this is all i got). For each piece, the music starts off in sync but then slips.

It was shot on the Z1U so the specs of the video are:
    frame size: 1440×1080
    Compressor: 1080i60
    Video rate: 29.97
    Audio rate: 48kz
    Audio format: 16 bit

The sequence settings match this except for the 32 bit floating audio rate.

The audio rate for 90% of the mp3’s are: 44.1khz and 32 bit floating. There is one .aiff which is 48khz/16 bit and one .wav which is 44.1khz/16bit. The slippage is happening on ALL the pieces, even the .aiff and .wav. I’ve tried changing the sequence settings to 44.1 but the problem remains.

What’s going on and what can i do to fix it?

    oh my specs:
    FCP 6.0.5
    Dual 2 Ghz PowerPC G5
    Mac OS 10.5.6
    4GB Ram

(i also have another tower with FCP 7 and it’s doing it there too).

    thx…renee

Heres my answer from yesterday –

    https://forums.creativecow.net/thread/8/1128869

I understand that a search will bring up a lot of posts as this is a very commonly asked and answered question, so here it is in a nutshell –

Use Compressor to convert all audio to 16 bit 48khz aif files BEFORE you bring them into the timeline, unless they are already 48khz and uncompressed.

    Hi,

Thank you for your response…unfortunately i think it’s something different. As i mentioned one of the music files is a .aiff and is the correct specs and it’s still having the problem.

Also in the past i’ve worked with temp mp3 audio files until i got .aiffs and i’ve never had this problem before….

    any other advice?

PS, i did try what you suggested with the mp3s and it’s not working.

Once all your mp3s are in the correct format, you have to have your default project settings match the exact frame rate of your current project.

Read this tutorial which explains the correct procedure for importing audio assets into FCP. –

They are already matching as i stated in the first inquiry…i’m positive. (i.e. when you bring the project file media into the timeline it asks you to match the settings….)AND i’ve quadruple checked this a million times.

Furthermore this does not explain why the problem persists with the 2 .aiff or .wav audio files that i’m working with.

    Hey Michael,

I had to walk away from this issue due to work but now i’m trying to finally wrap this puppy up. I’ve spent hours trying different things, testing, redigitizing the footage, etc. I’m digitizing my footage at the proper settings: hdv 1080i60… I’ve tried various ways to change the mp3s into 48khz .aiffs (compressor, quicktime conversion, …) …..NOTHING i do gets the music sound files (.aifs) in sync with the camera audio files. I’m baffled. Can you lend any more insight to what the problem may be? and how to fix…i’ve never come across this before.

OK we need to go back to first principals. Is the music EXACTLY the same as was used to playback to the dancers? If so what did they use to playback. Sync issues can start on location and so far we have been assuming it is a post issue.

    You’re right…

yes, the music is from the director of the show, so i got it from the source. I know she provided it to the theater. Great question on what was used for playback…i’ll need to ask. I’ll keep you “posted!” (sorry, couldn’t resist!)

I’m struggling with a similar problem. I’m trying to export a QT version of a half hour tv show. By the time I’m 3/4 the way through, the audio is out of sync. All my media is 16 bit 48k. In the past I have been successful in trashing ALL the renders, re-rendering the entire timeline and then exporting a QT. For some reason it is not working this time. Very frustrating since I have to spend about an hour to re-render and then output, just to find out its still screwed up.

But try trashing all your render files and re-rendering before output. It might work.
