Thanks, Gregor – you’re absolutely right, but it’s buggy as it turns out – works sometimes but not others which is what was driving me mad and still is.

OK, I think I’ve worked it out – Shift-S only influences skimming mode audio scrub not anything else which is not what I want at all. I passionately hate hearing that stab of audio you get when you move the playhead and I’ve hated it as long as there have been NLE’s – turning it off is always the first thing I hunt for!

Remember working on a flatbed, where all you had to do was push the audio sliders down?

Remember working on a Moviola, where all you had to do was lift the pivoting audio head off of the track?

Remember working on a sync block…?

Back then, when you learned Moviolas weren’t going to be sold anymore and you had to upgrade to a flatbed, then tape, then EditDroid, then Avid…you were constantly learning that you were going to work faster, but it was going to cost you handsomely for the upgrade.

The last ten years have been a blissful downhill run, as you learned you could ditch your edit decks for an Avid computer setup, then learned you could ditch the expensive Avid for a cheap software solution called Final Cut Pro. And now we can go to a $300 solution!

Except, as I have said elsewhere on COW, we have apparently seen the last of Apple-supported really cheap fully functional pro edit & post suites. We may have to begin the uphill climb again (financially speaking), first spending time & money to convert any FCP7 projects we want to keep using well into the future, to other NLEs — or paying interns and assistants to do it — and then becoming a customer of more expensive software like Avid, Autodesk and beyond.

On the other hand, broadcast TV and features may die a slow death, along with publishing houses and newspapers, PBS and lots of other traditional high-end media outlets. Maybe FCPX will meet the future in the middle, and video will be exactly like music — meaning you make it in your house and it goes around the world and people consume it for cheap. And you have to make public appearances to support your video for any kind of profit! Back to four-walling your feature!

Print- apple introduces desktop printing and changes publishing and design

Audio- apple gets sued by apple records for putting an in out audio recording device on their computer. Then revolutionizes music with computer driven sets ups and finds a way to share music over the Internet where artists can sell their work.

Motion pictures/moving media – final cut pro democratized editing film. FCPX is phase two of opening up editing to the world.

Edit systems should be fluid, they should be assessable and powerful and they should cost next to nothing. That allows people into the fray. I’m glad apple did this. There is a whole generation of people who will benefit from this and use their tools and delivery mechanisms (the web) to share and tell stories.

What people don’t get about all the web functionality (until it happens) is when how this will open up global thinking with the fastest growing sector.

People WATCH the Internet now more than they READ the Internet. I see FCPX as a kind of media literacy tool, built for the media world forming.

I know I might sound overly optimistic and too positive but its not about us. It’s about our kids now.

I don’t doubt any of it. For our kids literally. My son just graduated high school last week. He has been making films since 6th grade, first on iMovie, then FCP. We are contacting his college media department to see if they are laying in multiple copies of FCPX — and if not, we are going to advise them to do so.

I meanwhile teach film/video at my son’s (former) high school. Perfect set up for students, that easily scales to pro work of the type you & I are speculating on: 27″ iMac, Thunderbolt to lots of storage, FCPX and a fast broadband pipe to the rest of the world.

have you figured out when you still hear audio scrubbing? so far, whenever i have audio skimming off, i don’t hear it during skimming or when scrubbing the playhead…
