  • Audio Sample Rate capturing problem via Digital8

Hello again. Im trying to digitize some footage off of some sony Digital8 tapes that I had recorded a few years back. The tape itself was recorded in 16 Bit audio mode, and LP. I have tried capturing via final cuts default Firewire 48khz setting, but if I digitize for more than 20 minutes, the audio and video lose sync. I have checked to make sure the settings are set to abort capture on dropped frames or timecode breaks, so I am not sure what is happening. The properties of the clip say the Audio Rate is at 47998.2Hz, which I am guessing is the problem. I have tried digitizing at both 44.1khz and 32khz, but both of those settings bring up an error message after completing capture telling me my settings don’t match the audio clock sample rate of the source tape.

    Anyone have any ideas?

[vintageseltzer] “tape itself was recorded in 16 Bit audio mode, and LP.”

The fact that it was recorded in Long Play could be the problem. It sounds silly, but you could try digitizing it in iMovie to see if it has the same problems.

    Thanks for the reply.

Yikes! iMovie! I guess I could give that a shot… What kind of files does iMovie make? Am I sacrificing quality to use that?

Anyone else out there have any ideas?

iMovie uses the same DV file that you would get by digitizing through FCP. You’ve already sacrificed quailty by recording in LP instead of SP.

I only suggest it because FCP isn’t working for you right now with your LP tape. It might be worth a shot.

You could also just digitize your tape in short segments in FCP. It might minimize the sync issues.
