Audio recording de-synchronized
Posted by Frederic Baumann on September 14, 2010 at 10:08 pmHi,
[Vegas Movie Studio Platinum HD 10]
When I record an audio track in real time, I have a desynchronization problem: when I stop the recording, I can see that the audio finishes 2 or 3 seconds later than the end of the video previewed during the recording, for a total recording time of about 20 seconds.
Example: if I record sound over a 20-second video, then the audio will be 22-23 seconds long, whereas it should be only 20-second long.
So the sound track is desynchroninzed compared to what happens on the video 🙁An hypothesis might be that the preview does not render in real time when audio recording is on, and lasts about 22-23 seconds instead of 20. But this is just an hypothesis I make.
Would you have any idea? or tips&tricks to work around this problem?
Thanks in advance,
Frédéric—

September 14, 2010 at 11:03 pmAre you recording the new audio track with the same sample rate that the video has? DV and HDV have 48k sample rate audio.

September 15, 2010 at 7:32 amHi,
Thanks for your answer and for pointing this out.
So here are some info about my project:
Project properties for Audio : Stereo, 22050 Hz, 16 bits, resampling and stretching quality : Good
Recorded WAV files: 22050 Hz, 16 bit, Stereo.
Rendering: 128 Kbps, 22050 Hz, 16bit, Stereo, AAC
Would you have any idea to fix my problem?
Thanks in advance,

September 15, 2010 at 12:44 pmIt sounds like it might be a latency problem. What audio interface are you using? Does it have ASIO drivers? If it doesn’t have ASIO drivers you will not get a low latency recording and you will always have a delay from the time you think you recorded something to the time it actually got recorded. You can play around with buffer settings but the “real” fix is to invest in a good audio interface if you plan on recording real-time audio.

September 15, 2010 at 3:53 pmHi John,
Thanks for your answer. I don’t know what is ASIO. I would guess Asynchronous S?? Input/Output.
And I don’t know how to know if I have ASIO or not. I had a look at the device manager of my PC, in the Audio, Video, Game controllers folder, but found nothing like ASIO.
My PC is a DELL Latitude E6400 laptop, and I am using the default sound card with the embedded microphone.
Later on, I plan to buy the Zoom H4n (to record audio along with my Canon EOS 7D). I have read it can also be used as a USB microphone. Do you think it would solve my latence problem described in this discussion?
Thanks,
Frédéric—

September 15, 2010 at 6:52 pmForgot one point. If the h4n does not make it, what would you recommend ? — knowing I am “on a budget”, as I believe you say in English.
Thanks again,

September 15, 2010 at 7:49 pmSorry, me again. I have done something I should have done before writing the last 2 posts: looking for what ASIO is.
ASIO actually stands for Audio Stream Input/Output, and according to what I read, manages latency in a much more efficient way than the DirectAudio API does under Windows. I have found a free ASIO Driver, Asio4all (https://www.asio4all.com/). It seems to be the most commonly used, after the “KX” drivers, which only work for Sound Blaster cards.
It looks like I just have install it, and any ASIO-enabled application (including Vegas?) will use it to drive the audio peripherals like mikes and speakers.
I will install and test asap and will let you know what it gives – unless somebody else gives his feedback before here.

September 15, 2010 at 9:02 pmASIO4ALL is the best approach since you are using a laptop without ASIO support. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t. Make sure in Vegas you go to Options | Preferences | Audio Devices and select the ASIO4ALL driver. Good luck,

September 15, 2010 at 9:27 pmHi, I have just installed the driver, and it seems to work fine:
– It appears and I can select it in the preferences
– I did a 30 second recording and even at the end there is no lag
– However, I cannot right now make a test with a video played while recording, which is the context in which I had the problem before. Maybe playing the video back loads the CPU in such a way that the sound gets lagged. So I cannot be certain that the problem is fixed right now, but it is in very good shape though.I should be able to make the final test tomorrow or the day after, I will let you know.
Thanks very much once more John !!

September 15, 2010 at 11:07 pmIf you are narrating to the video, you can make the preview smaller to get better frame rates. Just resize it until you see the frames per second count stabilize at the frame rate of the video.
