Hey Steve, I’m sorry I did get to this until just now but what I believe is really wrong with your file is that you have digital clipping probably due to an overloaded pre-amp so any “click” remover is not really the way to go. If you zoom all the way in to view your waveform, you’ll see that the tops of the wave forms around the clicks are flat! That’s what’s making the clicking sound as opposed to “real” pops and clicks that would normally be caused by signal interference.

What you need to use is iZotope DeClipper. This will restore the flat tops of the wave forms and remove the clicking due to clipping. I just tried and it it removed the clicks pretty well.

It’s not clipping. I was careful to watch the clip LEDs on the preamp and they never lit (even then, the clipping LEDs come on at 95% of peak, leaving a bit of head there). And the midstrean mix sounded great. (Midstream is after the preamps but before sending the channels over the Firewire to the laptop).

And the clicks happen during quiet passages.

After discovering the problem at lunch, I unplugged the second Firepod and went to 8-channels and the second set was good.

Thanks to Alexey with his Izope RX, the noise is greatly diminished now and I’m not too embarassed to have my name in the credits.

Now, I would like to know what Alexey did to the files and how does RX compare to Spectral Layers?

Steve, be assured iZotope is pure VooDoo. I’ve used it on many instances of dreadful audio.

Once it samples the nasties it gets on with the job. There’s some great tutes out there to watch. You’re going to have some real jaw-dropping experiences.

Pricewise, RX is close to the cost of Sony’s Spectral Layers. How would you rate/compare RX to SL? If you could only buy one for general noise fixing, which would you buy and why?

I like the spectral concept because I do record some dance recitals and they invariably have a tap number or two. If I could enhance the tap without PZM microphones that would be a plus.

It was completely automatic! (in fact I did not even listen to Set1 because I had to remotely process it from home on my office PC).

However I had to modify the Declicker detection algorithm to work better with this type of clicks. Hopefully the next version of RX will have this improvement integrated.

On RX vs. SL: I think that RX has a huge advantage for restoration work. SL is perhaps more flexible for spot editing, but RX has automatic tools that specifically target noise reduction.
