At a wedding reception during one of the toasts where the best man was using a mic from the DJ I picked up what sounded almost like a stream of water in the background. I was not using a wireless mic, just the on-cam mic. The volume of the toast is fine. Two questions: 1) what would cause this? 2)how can I fix it? TIA, Jim

For broadband noise like that you really need a noise reduction plug-in. Try BIAS Sound Soap 2 ($), Sony Noise Reduction 2 ($$), or iZotope RX ($$$). Each one cost more than the other and does a better job but Sound Soap 2 is pretty impressive for the price.

John, thanks for your reply. I also have a limited edition of Sound Forge Audio Studio 9. I wonder if the noise reduction filter in that would be of much help. Jim

I’m not familiar with the Studio version of Sound Forge but it sounds like it’s worth a try. You should be able to right-click an event in Vegas Pro and select Open a Copy in Sound Forge to work on it there. When you are finished, save it and the audio will be added back as a Take.

    John,

I am fairly satisfied with how Sound Forge Audio Studio LE handled the problem. It’s not perfect, but it is much improved. Probably not as good as the more $$ programs, but I saved the $$. Just FYI, I had to take the problem audio, make a WAV file, import that into Sound Forge, make the corrections, then save it as a WAV file and import it into Vegas. When I tried to right click and open Sound Forge within Vegas, the “audio restoration” tool was grayed out in the menu.

Any ideas what could have caused this problem? I was not using wireless mics, and I don’t recall the audio sounding that bad when I was recording the toast. Thanks, Jim

I assume you mean that it was grayed out in the Sound Forge Studio menu? I have no idea. I have the full version of Sound Forge 10.

Sorry for the confusion, John. What I meant to say was “Any idea what caused the original audio problem?” I’m puzzled because I was not using a wireless mic, and I don’t recall the audio from the DJ’s mic sounding bad. I would have thought that the audio should had recorded just fine. Thanks, Jim

It’s hard to tel without hearing the sound. Were you wearing headphones while recording? This is the best way to hear what the camera is hearing.
