    Running a G5, Dual 2.7, 10.4.11, FCP 6.0.4, Quicktime 7.5.5
I am updating a post from last week. I have a client who is experiencing peculiar audio playback issues in his timeline sequence, initially when playing back VO he has recorded through a microphone/yamaha mixing desk/line input. The problem has now spread to ALL audio and does not appear to be soley a VO problem. The audio appears to have recorded fine as it often plays back without error in the finder AND in other sequences. But the problem returns intermittently during playback in FCP and apart from it being very annoying, it makes the audio unusable and hard to cut with. To be more precise, the audio crackles and stutters and even repeats split second portions of it in playback (ie if speaking the word “stutter” it would sound like “st, stutter”). The source audio files are your standard AIFF, 16-bit Integer (Big Endian), Stereo, 48.000kHz file and the VO is recorded using the VO Tool in FCP. The problem appears to lay in the processing of the files in FCP. In response to a previous reply, I will try duplicating some of the audio tracks in Finder as a test, to see if this helps. But in the meantime… does anyone else have any ideas?

Have you tried an audio mixdown?

No – haven’t tried mixing down. I’m not entirely sure what you mean, purely because the editor is still knee-deep in the edit. I assume you mean mixing it down to improve the sequence playback performance but I don’t really think this is feasible as he is still cutting from original rushes and re-recording VO on a daily basis. Please feel free to elaborate… ;o)

An audio mixdown is easy. Select all and hit command option r.

Also, what format of footage and do you have a capture card?

Have you tried deleting any and all audio renders?

I don’t have a problem with “physically” carrying out an audio mixdown – I’m just not sure exactly what this will achieve or how this will allow the editor to keep working, since he is still in the “Rough Cut” stage and is constantly pulling new clips in and out of the sequence. Wouldn’t this make the audio mixdown useless in that situation?
Most of the video clips are DVCPROHD or HDV rushes (1080i, 29.97).
All rushes were captured using the HD Extreme Blackmagic capture card on a separate station before being transferred to their media space RAID. Therefore, some of the VO audio is saved to the local hard drive, but most media is saved to the RAID. There are 4 other machines in the building connected to the same RAID “set-up” so I don’t think there is any issue in playing back off the RAID.
The problem is intermittent so it’s hard to diagnose.
No – I haven’t tried deleting any render files as yet. Perhaps worth a try?

I highly recommend that you have the client do the mixdown.

    Then, report the results.

Shall we try the new image embed function?

Thanks for the feedback, Guys. The editor is currently working through the project with no real problems so I’m leaving him to it for now. However, I plan to mixdown the audio next time we experience the said problems and I shall respond with my results. ;o)
