Activity Forums Apple Final Cut Pro Legacy Audio Playback

Okay… so I got the DSR-11 today (little thing rocks!) and wanted to start logging and capturing all the footage for my film. The only problem is there is no audio playback. If I capture (I know during the actual capturing audio won’t be heard) and play the clip I have video and audio, no problem. But during the logging I need to hear the audio to assess good takes versus bad.

Where is the setting to turn audio on during logging? I’ve tried switching under Audio/Video Settings from Firewire DV to Built-in Audio but that doesn’t work. I’ve tried going under View/Audio Playback and tried changing it from Follow Video to Built-in Audio and Firewire DV but that doesn’t work.

What am I doing wrong? When I used by XL-1s to capture I got audio. Thanks!

[Marc Buhmann] “What am I doing wrong? When I used by XL-1s to capture I got audio.”

Sorry, but if you don’t hear it with the DSR-11, you didn’t hear it with the XL1.

Unless you have made changes in your settings, there is no difference between the FW inputs of either.

This is a VERY frequently-asked question.
You can find answers in seconds if you will use the “Search Posts” function here on the COW.

The audio is, by default, intentionally MUTED to the Mac’s speaker output during Log and Capture.

So you should normally monitor the audio directly from the camcorder or deck you are using to capture. (It is the preferred method.)

    CAUTION:
Many people have reported that noise or “pops” appear in the captured clips if the Mac’s internal audio is left on WHILE capturing… so may want to choose “Off During Capture.”

However, there is a way you can turn ON the Mac’s speaker if you really WANT to:
    —————————————————————-
    In FCP4x and earlier:

Final Cut Pro (menu) > Audio/Video Settings… > Capture Presets (tab)

“Duplicate” the Capture Preset you are now using, when the window opens rename it (I added “MacAudioOn” to the file name).

Click open the “Advanced” button in the Audio section and turn speakers to “ON during Capture.”
The Mac speakers/audio-out will now play Audio during the preview in the Log and Capture window.
    —————————————————————-
    In FCP5x and later:

    In the Record Tool:
Clip Settings, near audio buttons, choose: Preview: “ON”

Sorry I asked a FAQ. I actually did a search here and on the Apple Discussion forum and didn’t find anything. I was probably using the wrong search words.

In any event, thanks for the response. It’s appreciated.

The problem is that not many self trained editor monitors audio and video properly as they are working. Either they just don’t know they need to do that, or don’t think it’s important. Wrong workflow on both accounts.

At ALL times when working with FCP, leave the DV deck powered up. The speakers and video monitor should be hooked up to that deck AS you work. Focus your attention on the video monitor and what you hear out of the speakers, not the Canvas or any audio coming from your Mac. Hope that is clear.

This is called monitoring and it’s a basic setup that ALL pro editors should use.
