I have noticed several times in working on my daughter’s hockey videos that the audio output meter will clip or be at the high red zone. This has occurred after adding a sound commentary track or music track to the already present hockey audio track. I have generally just adjusted down the various track’s volume slider to bring the levels down. So, my question is, at what level should one generally strive to keep the overall sound at? Is it best to stay out of the red or yellow levels as much as possible, or is it ok to be there but to just not clip? Thanks.

You can apply the track compressor audio effect at track or bus level to keep your volume at -6db, w/o the hassle of adjusting the volume for each events.

Personally I try to get as close to clipping without doing it. I like my music and videos to as loud as possible when people listen. I hate it when my youtube vids are not as loud as the others so I will also add a compressor or limiter before normalizing to get rid of those unwanted peaks that limit the normalize feature. Most music from comercial CDs look like a square wave, to get the volume up.
