I have something in an mkv file that I need to get into vegas for editing. I’ve tried just about every guide on the net. That ranges from extracting the actual files from the mkv (it’s an h.264) and converting them, to just using some of the mkv converters out there. If I convert to .mp4 or .mov, I get audio but no video (the weird thing is that the video track shows up in the timeline, it’s just all black). I’ve tried converting to .avi and I get various things from no video to Vegas crashing.

Everything plays fine when I open it up in a media player so it shouldn’t be a codec issue.

Try using AviDemux 2.5 to convert the MKV file to an AVI file with MJPEG video and PCM audio. Vegas Pro 9.0 should be able to open this up just fine.

I gave that a shot and got some interesting results. They appear in windows explorer as just being file type “file”, won’t play in any of my media players and in Vegas they don’t even show up in the explorer.

Something is not right because MJPEG AVI files should play in Windows Media Player by default. Did you add the “.AVI” extension after the filename when you saved it? Otherwise Windows and vegas won’t know what type of file it is (try adding it now if you didn’t).

What version of Windows are you using? What version of Vegas are you using? Did you have your AviDemux settings like this (make sure you selected MJPEG and not MPEG!):

Yep, those are the exact settings I’m using, and I get the results I described up above. I made sure to pick MJPEG, and not MPEG by mistake.

I’m surprised that didn’t work but I don’t have any MKV files to test with (I simply have no need for that format). You can try using Super(c) but it’s harder to use (which is why I use AviDemux).
