audio on the primary storyline problem

I think there might be a more efficient way to do what you are trying to do and we could help you out. Would you consider making a quick screen recording and throwing it up on YouTube or other place so we can see your workflow, and then give you our thoughts?

Interesting. It looks like some kind of bug. I’ll try to reproduce it if I can. Are there any more specifics you can mention about the audio clips? How were they recorded? Injested? What codec?

Couple of tests to run also:

What happens when you select the remaining clips in the primary and instead of using the shortcut, you drag out of the primary, holding down the SHIFT key to prevent it from sliding?

Also, Can you select everything and copy/paste into a brand new project and then try the same thing? (This is to test whether you have some kind of corrupted project).

On a similar note, I’m doing a commercial in X today and decided to assemble a composite VO track inside a compound clip. Since the source is from cam files, I decided to edit these as A/V with the intent of removing the picture later. Ran into these issues. When you have audio overlaps/fades and decide to detach audio, the clip overlaps/fades go away. Selecting “break apart clip items” crashes the app. You cannot combine audio as a secondary storyline. The only option is to create another compound clip inside this compound clip (stupid). In the end, I simply changed the video opacity to zero and kept the video clips inside this compound clip.

BTW – it also appears you cannot duplicate a compound clip.

These are location recordings back in the day of tape and digitized to AIFF.

I already tried dragging the clips- a blue border is left on the vacated space and as soon as you release the clips bounce back up to the Primary Storyline. Tried with and without the shift key.

Haven’t done the copy/paste try but this is happening on multiple projects I’ve done 5 projects and the issue has shown up on 4. The 5th one had no connecting clips.

That could be a clue in and of itself. The only time FCPX doesn’t allow you to drag a clip out of the primary is when you’re trying to drag something that isn’t allowed. I think that maybe when you select that audio clip, FCP is auto selecting a gap clip to the left (perhaps one that is even only a frame long). If the gap is to the left of that other connected clip that would explain both the swapping of clips and the reason you can’t drag it out.

I could not recreate with my own media, so now I suspect a corrupt project.

Could it be that you can’t move the last audio because there is an audio clip connected to it at the start of the audio clip in the primary.

If you would compound the connected audio clip to the connected audio clip before it, so that those two are now connected together with one anchor before the audio in the primary.
Can you now lift the last audio out of the primary?

FCPx should be able too, but maybe it doesn’t allow it because it would loose the connected audio. Same as you delete any connected clips if you delete the clip they are connected too on the primary.

Well— the easiest workaround is to just place the still pix on a secondary storyline so that’s what I’m doing from here on in.

Unless all my projects (60) are corrupt it’s unlikely a corrupt project. It doesn’t happen for every clip in a project. Most behave.

So– is it true that audio transitions will not Lift from Primary Storyline? If I just select the clip and not the transition the clip moves down to become a connected clip but the transition stays in the PS.

It seems that the ability to work with audio is hampered when it is a connected clip. FCPX was not allowing me to place a cross dissolve across to connected clips.
