I am syncing Film dailies and I am trying to match the waveform of the clap with the image. As I scroll through the waveform, the SOUND of the clap is happening a frame or so before the actual VISUAL strike within the waveform. I have an AJA IO connected and I am running FCP with an offset of 4 (default) as I am not really using the monitor for visual syncing but rather the viewer.

First, change the default offset setting to zero.

Next, I am with you completely… There’s no doubt about it, the audio waveform monitor on the timeline in FCP simply does not serve the purpose precisely enough for what it is designed to do. The Apple engineers get a big D- on that one, and I think I’m being very extremely generous with that grade.

Oh, and BTW, I really liked the Graduate and many of your other films…

I know you were joking, but a really good book on editing is “Cut to the Chase” by Mike Nichol’s editor for the graduate and many others, Sam O’Steen.

So, what do I do regarding syncing? Do I sync the clap with the mark in the waveform or the audible mark??

BTW, I had more fun with “Closer”

Since you’re syncing in order to edit, I’d match what you see in the video track to what you hear in the audio track, and not worry about the waveform display.
