Option + W will turn on overlays in the timeline. This allows you to adjust levels directly in the timeline. For finer adjustments, hold down Command while you raise or lower the levels.

Thanks, that is great, and WOW, I can do the same to the video as well, sparing me that clunky Fade effect – always a pain to place.

What is the advantage to toggling the Overlay option off I wonder?
