Audio needs render when it shouldn’t
Hi there
I’d like to be able to play a clip’s audio in the timeline without rendering so I’ve converted it to ‘Linear PCM – Stereo (L R) – 48kHz – 16-bit’ in Compressor, but it still requires a render. What can I do?My FCP comp is 48kHz, 16-bit, channel grouped
Please help 🙂

If this is happening with a single stereo pair in the timeline try trashing your preferences and rebooting.

No it still needs rendering. This is the same for IMA 4:1.
(It only takes a second or two to render a 10-minute file so it’s very workable even though I don’t understand why.)

The conpressed file will definitely need rendering. Is this an AIFF file or something else?

It’s an H.264 video with IMA stereo pair audio tracks. Ive converted to H.264 video with PCM audio tracks too. Is there any way I can transcode the file so the audio will play unrendered when no effects are applied?

H.264 is not a production codec. It should never be used inside FCP. You need it to convert the video and the audio to a format supported natively by the application.

Sure. I’ve tried converting the H.264 to Photo JPEG. Is that a good video codec to use?
I don’t think I need the quality or footprint of something like ProRes.
I still have the same audio codecs to choose from though. Could you suggest a good audio and video codec combo for my MOVs that is more native please?Thanks for all your help with this. 🙂
