I’m looking for an audio plugin that will provide more/better feedback than FCP’s built in meters. I downloaded Inspector (free version) from Roger Nichols thinking it would work, but it doesn’t.

Some have suggested I buy hardware meters from Wohler or Logitek. These are fairly pricey and only measure audio units. I’d rather spend that money on a plugin that offers more features (like Inspector), if such a thing exists…

Any suggestions or is a hardware meter the best way to go? Here are specifics of our setup:
MacPro w/ AJA Kona LHe connected to Sony PVW-2800 Beta SP deck…output of deck plugged into Mackie mixer…studio monitors are Blue Sky MediaDesk 2.1 system. So we’re currently only running 2 channels of analog audio, but I’d like to invest in something that handles more depending on the cost difference. Any thoughts? Thanks, Brian

What’s wrong with the metering on the Mackie? Is it not enough for you have both the FCP meters & the Mackie ones, to give you the information you want?
My previous system was an Avid with a Mackie, and between the two devices, I was confident of my levels.

(would still have loved a big stereo pair of meters sitting just above my main monitor, at eye level, like the broadcasters use …)

Don’t expect free VST plugins to work with FCP. The plugin architecture is not VST.

Meters in FCP are a useful guide but FCP is not a proper finishing tool for audio post.

The type of work we normally do has a very short turnaround time. A lot of it is VNRs and b-roll packages for broadcast. Using Pro Tools or any other extra software really isn’t an option due to time, learning curve, extra cost, etc. I thought the Roger Nichols plugin would work because on the site it said it’s compatible with AU plugins (and my audio buddy told me it would). I guess the FCP meters will have to do (the output of the LHe goes direct to the Beta, so metering on the Mackie isn’t an option). Thanks for the help, Brian
