This is a really tricky one to describe so I will do my best!

Often when playing a timeline with multiple audio tracks (featured voice on 1/2 plus music on 3/4 for example) the volume of the output from my machine will drop at certain points even though the clip and master volumes have not changed (VU peaking around -6, yellows not reds).

If I stop and start playback at the point the audio changed it will then playback at a consistent level but the same fault will happen again when playing a timeline through in it’s entirety.

I am using the most up to date Premiere pro on a mid range 2018 iMac Pro – I didn’t have this problem with my old 2011 iMac and I’ve muddled through ever since changing to the new machine.

Do I need a different output setup rather than just using internal speakers maybe?

Could be basic so apologies if it’s a simple one!

    Thanks in advance.

Hi – you’ve probably done this already, and this is not a solution, but in terms of looking deeper – I might play the timeline with the audio clip mixer or audio track mixer windows open and just watch that as you get to the point where you experience the drop and see if the track is dropping or just the output to your speakers.

Another thing you can do is export the timeline as an audio file and open it in Audition, or through a media player and see if the problem exists outside of Premiere.

For me, I prefer to monitor my audio with wired headphones – at least for the subtle decisions.

It’s the output to the speakers, usually when there are more than one or two tracks in play – it’s really odd!

Does the speakers drop if you play it outside of Premiere?…I might try to export it as a wav file, then play it though a media player, iTunes, Audition etc to see if the behavior is unique to your timeline within Premiere or in your overall output.

Nope, just on the timeline. I’ve not had any problems delivering films – apart from the challenge of sound mixing with a system that adjusts the volume at will!

In my analog days, this was often caused by phase cancellation. If you shift an audio track by one frame, ignore the ensuing echo, but tell me if the loudness is then correct. That would prove it was phase cancellation

I’ll have a go – I’ve not noticed a pattern to when it happens so I’ll just have to try that next time it occurs.

    Thanks tho!
