Audio Mastering or individual channels?
Hi, I was doing some audio mixing with the Final Cut audio mixer and I’ve come across some confusion.
Is it better to modify the audio for 0dB’s on each individual track so that the voices are more audible on their own track – or is it best to modify the audio so that the Master is no more than 0dB’s.
If say the speaking tracks are reaching 0dbs when I raise them, but the Master only altogether amounts to -12dBs should I then raise the voices audio so that it is peaking on the individual track, and at 0dBs on the Master feedback?

You should mix for the master – your final output. The peak and other levels may vary according to your delivery specs. If it’s for broadcast, get the delivery specs from the broadcaster. They may specify a dialog level, an average level and/or a peak level, For instance, dialog might be -20 with peaks not to exceed -10. But check with your client to be sure. If the delivery is for DVD, the specs will probably be different. If you have a dialog level specified, you should first adjust you dialog to conform to the spec. Then, add music and effects around the dialog so it remains audible.
