  • Audio Level Weirdness – What’s going on?

Posted by _adam_ on October 11, 2006 at 6:44 pm

I have an audio clip that plays at about -18 decibles in my browser, but when cut into a sequence, the volume reduces to about -42! Anyone seen this before? What’s going on?

Initially I would have thought that there would be some sort of problem with my sequence settings, but they look fine.

I’m guessing that the project file has become corrupted (it’s showing up on multiple stations). Can anyone help me?

    Thanks!

    Open in FCP

    Tools (menu) > “Audio Mixer”

and make sure the levels have not been reduced on that.

Woah, yes! The levels are being reduced on the Audio Mixer. When double clicked, the clip in the browser shows in the Audio Mixer that the Master level is set to 0, but when put into the sequence, the Master level moves down to -12.

Any idea what’s causing this, and ideas on how to undo it? Anytime I move a clip into the timeline, regardless of where it’s coming from (the browser, another project, the finder), the Master Volume of that clip gets reduced to -12.

Thanks so much for the help!

    Try trashing your FCP Preferences.

A great way to do this is to use “FCP Rescue”
Download this free Apple Script at

I notice same thing. I would normalize and add small amount of compresssion to audio in soundtrack pro and then import aif to FCP and lose all my gain even though the db says 0 inFCP.

Anytime you add compression, you loose audio levels. Try using the compressor in FCP and playing with it instead, if you don’t want your audio levels reduced outside of FCP.
