  Audio Issues

  I’m having somewhat unpredictable issues with Audio Playback in one of my projects. Our editing room is set up such that sequences with subtitles are created on separate workstations from the master editing workstation. After these sequences are completed, the sequences are copied into one of the master projects on our master editing workstation. Yesterday we began to see instances where the audio in parts of those sequences was no longer correct. The sound was both heavily distorted and very low when monitoring through speakers connected to an AJA IO unit which is connected via firewire to our G5. If you monitor the audio using the Built-In Audio, the audio sounds fine, but if you monitor parts of the sequences via the AJA it does not work correctly.

  What makes the issue tricky is that you CAN monitor other sequences and media files fine through the AJA with NO problems with the audio. In a test, we found that if you viewed/monitored a specific Source Clip that was contained in the sequence, it would sound fine. If you then viewed the subtitled sequence, the audio for that instance of the clip in the sequence would be bad. Then, if you went back to view the original Source Clip, its audio was now bad. Next, if you went to a different sequence (in our case a Selects sequence) and played the instance of that clip, it would sound fine. If you then went back to the Source Clip again, it would now be back to sounding fine. Any suggestions as to why the Audio could change in this way? The source audio files have not changed in any way and clearly no references are changing between the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd times you view that Source Clip in that test.

  I have already trashed the preferences, ran basic unix maintenance on the machines, fixed permissions on our system drive, cleared the PRAM, and reinstalled the setups/driver for the AJA board before restarting FCP. Our machines are Dual 2.3 GHz PowerPC G5’s, 4.5 GB RAM. We are running FCP 4.5 with Quicktime 6.5.2. Our media is on two external RAID’s, a Rourke and an Apple RAID connected with fibre cards. Media is copied to either G-RAID or LaCie firewire drives during the subtitling, but that media is never moved back to the RAIDs.

  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
