I’ve used Sony Vegas studio 7 plat. for a month or so with my Panasonic DV palmcorder and it has worked great, except for the audio. Whenever I import the data from the tape the video imports fine, but the audio gets imported by being played by the camera and then recorded by the microphone on my PC. This is troublesome because any noise in the background while I capture is recorded along with the tape. Firewire was recommended for Vegas, and I tried that, but although the Video quality increased, I still have the same audio problem. My question is, is there some kind of setting or something, that I can do/ change so that the audio is imported directly through the wire and not through the microphone?

    That’s really strange.
You capture using Vegas via firewire, and it contains no audio at all?
Is there a soundtrack in the captured file?

    Regards

It’s not that there is no audio, it’s that it gets recorded by my pc’s external microphone. So for example when I start capturing you can hear the sound being played by the Camera, but not through the computer. The sound coming from the camera gets recorded by the microphone and that becomes the soundtrack in the captured file. Usually if I capture with any other software (such as Imovie) you can hear the sound being played by both the computer and the camera.

    Hmmm, humor me 😉

Go to the capture program of Vegas, under OPTIONS goto PREFERENCES then goto CAPTURE. Look and see if the Capture Audio checkbox is ticked.
You shouldn’t have to capture the taped audio thru the computer mic. Check the prefs and let us know.

Tom, you did buy, install and are are using a firewire card and cable, right?
If so , there’s no way you can end up with the problems you’re still having.
It sounds to me like you’re still somehow capturing through USB and not firewire.

Thank you so much! That was exactly the problem! I can’t tell you how stupid I feel, I’ve been trying tons of different methods for days and never even thought of looking there!

    Thanks again.

    “Hmmm, humor me ;-)”

    Good catch Don!!
I’ve never captured through anything but firewire so I’ve never had to worry about that particular option.
