Audio Interface advice needed
Posted by Ingrid Merktnichts on November 17, 2007 at 2:26 pmHi everybody!
I often need to capture 8 audio tracks from a Tascam DA-98 deck with Final Cut Pro.
Is there an audio interface available with 8 AES/EBU inputs or a TDIF input that connects via USB, FireWire ir as a PCI Express card?
Thanx in advance.Ingrid

I use this from Motu:

The inputs are mic/line switchable. Flexibility is extensive, the routing software is excellent, and it can be used on a stand alone basis.
Motu just updated all their USB/Firewire drivers [Leopard compatibility].
I’m happy with it. It sells for about $1K.

Thanks for your recommendation. I would prefer to buy an Interface with 8 AES/EBU inputs.

November 17, 2007 at 7:34 pmAh … I misread your note. The Motu only has a single AES/EBU input.

November 17, 2007 at 10:58 pmHi Jeremy!
I’m using a Blackmagic DeckLink HD Extreme PCIe. I currently slave audio from my DA-98 through a DVW-A500P via AES/EBU to get at least 4 channels at a time into FCP via the DeckLink cards SDI. This means a two-pass recording process for an 8 track tape. Thats why I’m asking for some advice. An audio interface featuring 8 AES/EBU inputs or something that accepts TDIF.

November 17, 2007 at 11:14 pmThe Kona will allow you to capture in one pass via 8 channels of AES.

November 18, 2007 at 7:40 amThe MOTU V3HD has 8 channel AES as well as 8 channel SDI embedded. I have only seen the brochure so don’t have an opinion on how it works with FCP. I am sure you can use it to record the audio as wav or even broadcast wav.
It looks like a really interesting device for SDI and monitoring as well. May be a better bet than the Matrox or even a Decklink?

November 18, 2007 at 8:40 amHI Jeremy!
It maybe sound strange but I don’t like the Kona cards, my experience with DeckLink cards is far superior compared to Kona cards. But that’s another story,
Has somebody ever used ADAT Lightpipe (aka ADAT optical) with an audio interface equipped with an ADAT optical port? For this to work with a Tascam DA-98 you need a TDIF to ADAT converter (like the Tascam IF-TAD). The converter outputs ADAT optical and this signal can connect to an interface like the Alesis io14, for example… -

and thanks for your tip. The MOTU V3HD looks like a great device but it seems to be an “overkill” for me…

November 18, 2007 at 8:29 pmAlright. This is cool if you want to buy more gear and hook stuff up, and then you have to get FCP to interface with that equipment. I suggest that you buy another capture card that is FCP friendly. If you don’t like Kona, then so be it, upgrade your decklink card to something that supports this process natively and then you won’t have to write back when you have 3 light pipe converters wondering why you can’t get any audio into FCP.
EIther one of these will work:
