  • Audio hits after capture

I just loaded some miniDV tapes that were shot 16:9. I am using a regular DV/NTSC 29.97 Easy Setup.

I am loading in the ftg so it appears tall and skinny and I click the anamorphic box in the clip info
    settings.

Everything looks good picture wise. I am getting audio dropouts or hits. Tapes play fine.

Been online researching for a couple hours, reached my max and am now asking for help. I remember
having this problem once but I can’t remember how I fixed it. I tried capturing to my desktop instead of the firewire. Same problem. Can’t remember if it is a capture preset or bit rate problem.

Anyone have some answers. I have to deliver a finished cut in a couple days and would love to start cutting first thing in the morning.

    Thanks a lot!

I would try a different firewire cable or deck if possible. Check the audio issues are recorded in – ie. occur in the same place each time. If not, this could be an external audio/video settings issue – assuming you are monitoring via the deck.

As far as settings go, check the audio bitrate matches to the tape (usually 48Khz in DV), as someone could have messed up the DV preset.

Couple of notes: If you open the capture preset you are using, and check the anamorphic box there before capturing, then you will not have to tick the anamorphic tag on every clip afterwards. And NEVER capture to the desktop – system drives and media should be kept seperate wherever possible – although I guess you were just trying to eliminate drive problems here.

    Thanks for the reply!

Just tried hooking up my Canon GL1 Camera. Would not even capture, image messed up when playing back. I only have the one deck cable, but I can’t imagine it’s the cable because I have been capturing a lot from my normal deck.

My normal deck is a Sony HVR DVCAM/HDV.

Audio issues occur in exactly the same place, yes.

On my deck when I play back the tape it displays “NS 48K”. Not sure what the “NS” means. My capture preset is DV/NTSC 48K. So that should match.

I did what you said about checking Anamorphic. Thanks!

    Any further thoughts?

I just tried loading a tape from a different project in the this current project. Tape loads fine without hits.

Makes me think it is most likely something to do with the relationship of the tape to the deck.

    Hi Ben,

Still plugging away on this problem.

I have some new information. These are the specs for the camera:

    Panasonic P2
    480i
    24p
    16:9
    48K 16bit
    Drop
    * Cameraman is telling me it was recorded in both SP and LP

Here are the solutions I have attempted with no luck:

    1. Different decks
    2. Different drives
    3. Different Easy Setups / Capture Presets / Device Control Presets
    4. Internal settings in deck (48k / 32k)

When I load in Quicktime I don’t get the stutter but the clips go out of sync when I bring them into Final Cut

I have not tried deleting preferences, I have a lot of saved effects, don’t want to lose them.

All the research on the net points to no solution for the problem.

Do you know what it might be?

The only option I have is to load in Quicktime in small bites, to retain sync. I would like to avoid that if I can. It wouldn’t be that bad, I only have three tapes.

    Thanks so much,

    Chris

I am having the same issue. When the tape is played back, the audio is fine. When it is captured, you can see blank spaces in the audio in the waveform editor. We have tried to capture with 2 different decks, direct from the camera, 3 different computers, 2 were Mac Pro’s running FCP 5.1 and one was a PC. I wasn’t there for the PC attempt but I believe it was using Adobe Premiere and Sony Vegas. Other tapes from other cameras work fine. I’ve also tried quite a few of the capture presets in FCP 5.1 including 32Khz & 48Khz as well as non controllable device preset just in case it was some kind of time code issue. The drop outs always occur in the same spots about every second or so. I have searched the new for answers and so far, I have only found people with this issue but no one has posted an answer. I was wondering if the previous poster ever found an answer to this. We do monitor the capture with monitors hooked up to the decks. At this point I suspect it is an issue with the camera although it has never given us an issue before. The weird thing is the audio sounds fine until it is captured so I’m not sure how we can know this is an issue while we film before we get the tape to the studio.

    Hi Chris,

It was so long ago but from what I remember I deduced that it was definitely an in-camera problem.
I think our operator shot on EP rather than SP for whatever reason. Or it may have been a bit rate problem. I can’t remember. But whatever it was, he did something wrong in the in-camera settings. Production was in LA and I am in NY so it was not possible to get the camera to look at or load in from.

Our project was for the web so I was able to cut around the audio hits and it was not that noticeable.
I did notice a very strange tinny sound in the audio but the music was able to hide it thank goodness.

Are you able to get your hands on the camera it was shot on and try loading in directly from that? I remember this as being a potential solution that I was not able to try. I cannot guarantee it will work but maybe it will you never know.

    Hope this helps.

Thank you very much. We are in a similar situation with the camera not being in my possession at the moment. Your answer helps verify what I suspected and I am having the camera sent to us so I can check it out. I really appreciate your response. It helped me justify getting the camera back.
