Just wondering how others get audio in/out of FCS or the Mac in general. Right now I am using a mixer and going into the line in jack on the back of the computer – to monitor I come out the headphone jack or via firewire since I have a firewire deck.

I know there has got to be a better way! Is there a card or something I should be using?

    Thanks all.

    Nothing wrong with your set-up.

You can spend a lot more on a card if you’d like.

Are you having any problems with the set-up the way it is now?

You mention FW… do you mean that you are monitoring via a FW camera, deck, or card/device while you edit?

You should always monitor for video quality on an external video monitor… your audio need to be in sync with that.
Best way is to decode the FW signal for Audio and Video at the same time, with the same unit.

Thanks for the input – the setup seems to work OK, but using those mini jack just doesn’t seem…um – professional…

I’m running FW to a deck and then to the monitor, so both audio and video are being transferred via FW at the same time.

I have used a broad range of options.

Lately I have used the balanced/unbalanced inputs on the video digitizing cards.

I recently added a Digidesign 002 rack for multitracking.

A simpler small step you might consider to over come the inherent noise issues with the Mac inputs… if you have a Mac with Optical I/O, consider picking up a decent analog <-> SPdif Optical converter. That just might fill all of your needs without tying up a PCI slot or FW channel.
