    Hey

I have been given a bunch of video clips to edit for a client. The client has passed the video on from a photographer/camera guy.

The clips play fine from the Finder, they play fine from the Bin within FCP. However as soon as I put them on the time line (clicking Yes to the dialogue box asking if I want to Match the sequence settings to those of the clip) the Audio begins to glitch. There are only audio render lines as soon as the clip is places into the time line, obviously rendered before playing.

I have tried different settings on the sequences and whilst that seemed to work the other day I can’t get it working now.

The clips are H264 1080i and recorded on an XD Cam, that is all I know.

I did re-encode the clips into ProRes using MPEG Stremclip and again this worked the other day but when I try to play the ProRes clip in the time line I hear a huge Pop/Click and then loose all audio system wide. Only fixed by a reboot.

If anyone could help that would be amazing. Am I missing a codec or something?

    thanks

    Hey,

Thank you so much for the reply. I was beginning to think that it was due to audio compression, the audio on the clips I was given were said to be ‘MPEG Layer 3’ which I assume is probably just as bad as MP3 for Final Cut?

For my time frame getting another version of the clips is looking unlikely. I have managed to re-encode the clips into ProRes 422 (HQ) and so far Final Cut seems to be playing them without a problem. Quality is not too much of a problem as they are just video’s for the web.

Thank you again. If things turn sour again I will get onto the original camera person and try to get hold of the files in a proper format.

You would be better off getting the original XDCam files. Your files have been unnecessarily trans-coded to H264 and the audio compressed to mp3. Turning them back into ProRes is yet another trans-code. FCP can work with XDCam as an edit codec which will be much better for both the picture and the sound.

[Fraser Callum] “‘MPEG Layer 3’ which I assume is probably just as bad as MP3 for Final Cut?”

MPEG Layer 3 is often shortened to mp3. It is the same compression codec.

Thank you. If my deadlines were not so tight I would indeed be hunting for the original XDCam files. Unfortunately my clients were not the original shooters so it’s going to be a bit of a round-a-bout to get hold of the files and I just don’t have enough time.

The re-encoded files seem to be working and the quality is easily high enough for what my client needs.

Thank you very much for your help, I’ve worked with Final Cut for a few years now but only on a student level so now entering the real world I am coming across certain problems that I just haven’t seen before. This has helped me learn quite a bit actually. Thanks

    Kind Regards

    Fraser
