Audio for video sync check – mini DV with external audio
I shot a live concert video on three mini DV cams and captured audio from the house mixing board at 48 Khz. Working in FCP, Vid Rate set to 29.97 and Aud Rate to 48 kHZ, NTSC, so do I need to worry about audio sync or drift issues? I’m not noticing any, but just to be sure. Mini DV captures 29.97 standard correct? This is ultimately going to web and DVD in the U.S. I was reading a little bit about “pull down” but it seemed that it was only necessary for PAL? Thanks!

Your sync should be good. If you’re not seeing any drift, there isn’t any. Mini-DV is 29.97. Pulldown only comes into play if your framerate is 24P (23.976). Pulldown is removed to make 24P shot over 29.97 into true 23.976 (shorthand in FCP is 23.98, but actual rate is 23.976). But, to do this you need to shoot 24PA (advanced pulldown) so FCP knows how to correctly remove pulldown. Search pulldown and you’ll find many threads. Look for Graeme Nattress’ paper on 24P. It will explain everything.
