  • Audio Filters??

Posted by Angela Boyd on August 11, 2005 at 4:05 pm

I am editing a piece that was shot in a studio with a wireless mic. The roomtone of this room is very noticable. It sounds like a light static, I think it’s from the air conditioner, or it could very well be the mircrophone. I’m not real familiar with the audio filters, as most of my editing is set to music backgrounds. What filters should I try and what should they be set to?? I’ve tried a few with no luck. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!!

If the sound is low try high pass, if its high try low pass. If this doesn’t work, you have to go with the sound as it is. Then the sound goes over several frequencies, you never get them out without loosing the frequencies in you voices.

If you’re using FCP 5 Production Suite, you think Apple has included an “intelligent” noise-suppressor in the audio package.
To use it, you play a short section of tape that just has the “noise” by itself (no talent talking) and the software samples it and then allows only audio that is NOT similar this noise to pass through.

I have never used this FCP 5 noise reduction, but a similar product comes from BIAS called “SoundSoap” (now called “SoundSoap 2”) and has been used by many to reduce this kind of complex noise.

You can buy SoundSoap for well-under $100.
