Hi everyone, lately I’ve been reading up and doing research on what equipment I should buy for the audio side of my production. I want to make feature films and will be primarily a one man crew- tough I am aware of that but I can do it. So here’s a preliminary list of equipment I will be buying in a few weeks, all advice and comments are welcome.

    * One Sennheiser MKH 50 mic for the internal and some external scenes. (Will buy the MKH 416 for proper shotgun useage at later date.) $1280. (Including an extended 3 year warranty.)

    * One rode system featuring a blimp system, dead wombat and shockmount. For all my external shot needs. (Plus can use it with the mkh 416 when i get that.) $300

    * One pair of Sony MDR 7506 headphones for monitioring audio. $100 including an extended 2 year warranty.

    * K tek boom pole with internal cable so it’s a lot easier for my inexperience boom operators and less mess. $225

    * Boom pole holder (as I can’t always hold it so will need it quite a lot for stationary shooting.) $60

    * Hollywood Grip Head – 2-1/2 So I can attach the boom pole to a c stand. (dont quite know how these work but should learn alright.) $30

    https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produc…rip_Head_.html

    * Matthews Hollywood Century C Stand Grip Head Kit, Black – 10.5′ (3.2m) To go with the above for boom poles and when I have lighting. $140

    * Sanken cos 11d xlr mic black For all my lav needs. $500 including extended 2 year warranty.

    https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produc…_Lavalier.html

    * Sanken cos 11d xlr mic black For all my lav needs. $500 including extended 2 year warranty.

(I will buy two of these so I can wire up two people when they are speaking and not worry.)

    * Pelican 1020 micro case for the above sanken lavs. $12

    https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produc…ase_Clear.html

    * Tascam Dr100 $450 For mainly recording the lavs into when I need a far away shot which cables would not be an option. Cheaper alternative to the g3 wireless set.

Speakers running out of money and don’t want to spend loads but need speakers good enough for dialogue etc. Ideally spend around $1000 – either

    * Genelecs without the sub woofer https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produc…ive_2_Way.html

    * JBL and a sub seperate:

    https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produc…SP_10_180.html

    * Yamaha with a sub woofer: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produc…g_System_.html

Oh and some star quad cables. One 2 meter one, 2 lots of 15 meters and 1 nice long 30 meter

Wow sorry this turned into a bit of an essay. Just wanted to note that depending on how the audio is a further payment after all the above would be to buy a hd-p2 for £500 to record all my audio into along with an 8gb ultra flash card.

Also will be buying adobe cs4 so I can do better video and audio edits.

Hello Taras and welcome to the Cow Audio Forum,

Sadly your links got truncated, but you look like you’re on a good (and full) course.

hey thank you its frustrating about the links. What do you think of those headphones? Some people say they’re great but other prefer the sennheiser headphones as they apparantly have a wider frequency range or something.

The Sony MDR-7506 is the workhorse of the industry (at least in the western hemisphere) but the Sennheiser HD-280 is gaining on it. You wouldn’t go wrong with either of them.

The things that are important for monitor headphones for field recording are:

Accuracy – the ability to hear what you are recording, warts and all. The Sony model is criticized by some for being “too bright”, but many find that an advantage for hearing the kinds of noise that should be reduced during field production.

Comfort – in order to wear them for extended periods. Recording sound without monitoring is like framing and focusing without a viewfinder or video monitor.

Isolation – reduction of acoustic sound so you are hearing only the audio signal.

Sony MDR 7506 or the less hyped Audio Technica ATH-M50 are my choices.

Taras, my only comment is that you should save your money and forget about the extended warranties. They’re just an extended profit for the seller. Your money will be better spent on gear.
