    Hi

After 5 years of pro editing, I’ve just got my first feature film gig! Woohoo! (albeit DV-based…!)

This now leaves me with a slight dilemma however…. I’m going to be doing the online and it looks like as well as the grading I’m going to be doing the sound mix (I’ve recommended they use a seperate audio guy, but there’s not much budget to splash around it would seem…).

Now, up til this point I’ve been doing all my mixes for broadcast in FCP and it’s been fine for what I’m doing but I really want to polish up the audio on this job. So, to get to my question…. What audio apps are people mainly using? And how are you getting your edits into your audio software?

I need something where I can just translate the whole FCP timeline into the audio app. Obviously ProTools will allow me to do this with OMF (the LE version will, I believe?). But what of any others? ProTools *may* be overkill for me at the moment…

I’m still running FCP4.5 at the moment (still running CineWave on one system and not wanting to rock the boat with the FCP5 upgrade yet). What are the issues with Soundtrack Pro and FCP4.5? I know you can take the whole timeline into STP from FCP5, has anyone tried successfully to take a FCP4.5 timeline into STP via XML? I’d heard it was possible to export a FCP sequence as an XML, and then open this up as a STP project, but can’t find any info about this in anything on the Apple site – not even the downloadable STP manual.

Hope some of you helpful people can help. To make matters work I’m on a bit of a tight budget at the moment (the job’s deferred payment). So if the XML thing works with STP then that’s probably the best way to go….

    Cheers,
    Jamie.

FYI, ProTools LE will not import/export OMF files without also buying DigiTranslator for $495.00.
And on top of that, in order to use DigiTranslator, you must then also buy an iLoc USB dongle.

Of course if you want full video support with time-code and such, you will then need to purchase DV Toolkit for $995.00.
I just love how Digidesign/Avid takes care of their customers!
