Audio edit in Vegas 10
I’m trying to do a simple edit on a small portion of the audio track of a video clip I’m working on in the timeline. Basically, I just want to mute a second or two of the track where someone coughs. I could copy the whole audio track to SoundForge, but SoudForge won’t open the track unless I buy an MPEG codex.
Before Vegas, I was using Roxio and it had the ability to edit audio in the timeline.
Am I missing something basic here?

Click on the audio timeline, press the ‘v’ (volume) key and you’ll see a blue line running the length of your audio track.
Double-click it 4 times, twice at the beginning and twice at the end of the desired location to add points.
Place your cursor between points 2 and 3 and drag them down to the bottom.
Drag points 2 & 3 over so that are right under points 1 & 4 respectively.
In the example below, I left points 2 and 3 up a bit so that you an see what I mean.

Thank you Mike. This is exactly what I was looking for. The User Manual doesn’t appear to have an example of how to do this.
I found a less elegant way to mute a segment by using the ‘S’ key; selecting the ‘fader’ across the segment; then dragging the fader curve to the bottom of the track.
Your method is simpler and has more functionality.

While I’ve got you in a good mood how can I remove a section of audio and insert audio in it’s place. Video is easy but I am wondering about audio. Anything I do seems to delete both audio and video. I cant isolate audio in a manner to delete that audio. I have a section of bad music I want to replace.

There are a few ways to do what you want but here’s the easiest.
This assumes that the replacement audio is an audio event, not an audio+video event.
Find the section you want replaced and drop the replacement audio event right over top of it.

You can ungroup a video event from an audio event by selecting it and hitting the “U” key (ungroup) just like you can group events together by selecting them and hitting the “G” key.
