audio drop out
I’m having audio drop out from 2 to 30 seconds throughout my timeline. We got audio from the sound board to 2 separate DV CAMS and I can hear the audio on my source tape and I can often see the audio waveline on my timeline but still can’t hear it in those sections – sometimes there is no audio waveline on timeline. There are about 8 drop out sections in a 2 hour show. Channel One was miked and that is where the drop out is. I can’t always fill in with the ambient Channel Two because the sound isn’t good enough.
I’m working with FCP 2 on a Mac G5.The really weird thing is that when I play it in DVD Studio Pro – the drouped out sound it there. I am burning it now to see if it digitizes there.
Any thoughts?

There is a function in FCP that is often overlooked… and it can help with many audio and video “skipping”, “sticking” and “missing” problems.
You should “Mixdown” the Audio for playback before you dub out of FCP, or during the edit, if you have audio/video stuttering, drop-outs, sync-slippage, or freezes.
NOTE: Mixdown has even been demonstrated to help with slipping, skipping problems (or “missing” audio clips) for files being EXPORTED as QT (or similar) files out of FCP.
First, SELECT ALL of your audio tracks (highlight them) on the timeline, then:
Sequence Menu > Render Only > Mixdown.
You should see a dialog box telling you its rendering.
It might seem to make little sense that “Mixing down” even simple audio tracks will “fix” complex video “freezes” or random audio dropouts to tape or export, but it CAN.
NOTE: It does not matter of you only have one audio track, if there are random freezes during output, you should try the Mixdown.

Wierdly enough, the audio drop out places in the timeline in FCP did not drop out when I put it in DVD Studio Pro. I am grateful but confused.

I just tried the mixdown. It didn’t work on any of the spots. I’m open and appreciative to any other suggestions you might have.

Go to FCP User Prerences and make sure you have plenty of “Real-time Audio Mixing” tracks set (I use 15 to 20.)
Then…
Locate your AUDIO RENDER FILES folder and trash all of the files for this project that are in that folder.
Then, perform the Audio Mixdown again.If still no joy,
“make off-line” the clips with the problem audio and recapture from the tape.
